Come, Holy Spirit! Today we celebrate the solemnity of Pentecost. In the readings today, we hear about the apostles receiving the Holy Spirit with the rush of wind and “tongues as of fire” coming to rest on them. This day marks the 50th day after Easter and the close of the Easter Season. The solemnity of Pentecost grants us the experience of an additional prayer at Mass: the sequence before the Gospel acclamation.

The sequence is a prayer written in Latin, rooted in the psalm response of the day, meant to draw greater attention to the overall message of the day. There are two days in the entire church calendar with a required sequence - Easter and Pentecost. (There are two additional days with an optional sequence - Corpus Christi and Our Lady of Sorrows.)

The sequence speaks of God the Holy Spirit, the final part of the trinity. We hear a multitude of names for the Holy Spirit, including Father of the poor and most blessed Light divine. May we be filled with the Holy Spirit on this day in particular, and use the gifts of the spirit in our own day to day evangelization. The apostles received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and began their public ministry. During these early days of a new pope, when non-Catholics are looking to us to learn more, may we be inspired by the example of the apostles to continue to spread the news of Jesus.
