Good Ground

It is just over 100 days since Easter Sunday and the end of our Lenten journeys, a time characterized by our fasting and repentance. I am bringing this forward to you for reflection as we consider our repenting. Is this still a part of our practice now? As our first reading from Wisdom highlights, God gave us “good ground for hope.” The cause of that good ground? That God would permit repentance for our sins.
As we look further into the Gospel, we reflect on what this good ground could fully mean, without weeds and brambles to get entangled in, not so uncommon to our ways that sin and darkness can entangle us. But as we look at the gift of good ground, it’s important that we also reflect on the seeds that we are sowing into that ground. A good ground is not only fertile but abundant in hope! I am sure you’ve heard the parable of the mustard seed before, but I encourage you to read it through new eyes. As you reflect on a need to repent or on the entanglements of sin, you might feel pretty small or insignificant due to the mission of the Gospel. Yet, the Gospel tells us that our ultimate hope, that of the Kingdom of Heaven, is like ONE mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, yet the largest when grown. Our smallness, when brought to God, allows life to dwell within, as it grows.
With repentance, we are given all we need to grow; to allow life, so why wouldn’t we receive that gift?
