A Very Acceptable Time

Writer: Ellen Romer NiemiecEllen Romer Niemiec

Behold, now is a very acceptable time;

behold, now is the day of salvation.

If not now then when? Will there be a better time? There is always going to be suffering. There will always be another load of laundry to fold or dirty dishes to wash. There will be another bill to pay. We will always be plagued with doubt and troubles. We will also always have a reason to rejoice. Anytime we decide to reconcile to God and to one another is acceptable to God. Anytime we decide to rid ourselves of what we do not need or give more to those who desperately need is very acceptable to God.

Behold, now is a very acceptable time;

It is Ash Wednesday. We have 40 days ahead of us. Lent is a season we share with so many, where it’s common practice to give something up or take something on. What better time than now? Perhaps we have pondered giving up something in years past that just felt like too much. Maybe there was something we wanted to commit ourselves to but just hadn’t quite trusted God, our ourselves, to see us through. What better moment to stretch ourselves further, reaching toward God and one another?

Behold, now is the day of salvation

None of it is wasted. Whatever the struggle of today may be, whatever joy we may relish or grief we carry, it is not wasted. Today is the day of salvation. Salvation may feel anxious or fearful. It may feel overwhelming and unsure. It may be confident and trusting in God’s grace. It may be none, all, or something in between. Wherever our courage takes us and wherever God’s grace finds us, it all can draw us closer to God. We may stumble in our forty days and lose our way. We may feel the victory of the resurrection. God will be with us each day. None of it is wasted.
