Dear Cardinals,
Our Global Church shares the sadness in mourning the loss of Pope Francis. This is not just a loss for all of you, but for the whole world. We have all begun to pray for you as you discern where the Holy Spirit is leading us, and who might be the best person to lead the Roman Catholic Church as a Servant Leader.
Our Church is in a pivotal moment. Our next Pontiff will help speak out for the most poor and vulnerable. He could become a world leader in promoting justice for all. The Church has often in the last two millennia, spoken on behalf of the vulnerable, and I hope and pray that The Church will continue to do so. I would like to share a little bit about the most vulnerable among us, so that you may keep them in your hearts as you discern who might lead us as the next Pope:
Women: If women are not given equal voice and equal access to all of the Sacraments, how can we see women as equals to their male counterparts, or even equal in the eyes of God?
LGBTQIA+ Community: If we still have places where it is considered illegal to identify as LGBTQIA+, we cannot all be safe and free. The Church needs to promote a safe world for LGBTQIA+ people, and offer all 7 Sacraments to this community
Promoting Peace: Our planet is fraught with war, mostly over greed. The Church, in the spirit of the Prince of Peace, can offer tools for promoting peace and a ceasefire wherever weapons are being utilized.
Our Planet: Our Earth is very vulnerable now, and is in desperate need of healing. The Church can take the lead shepherding people into action that will heal the earth.
Immigrants and Refugees: Millions of people are not safe in their homeland. The Church can continue to speak out to encourage nations to continue to offer a safe and radical welcome to people who are immigrants and refugees.
My dear Cardinals, you will be in our prayers, and we have faith that you will keep these five points in your minds and in your prayers as you elect the next Pontiff.
With blessings and peace,
Jocelyn E. Collen, M.Div.
